Steam train connects Bosnia, Serbia 28 August 2010 - Bosnia and Serbia have restarted an old steam-powered train in an effort to increase tourism in a region that was devastated by war in the 1990s. Bosnian and Serbian officials say the joint Serbia-Bosnia effort also is aimed at restoring the broken ties between the wartime foes. (more)
Better regional ties helping heal Bosnia 1 June 2010 - Growing cooperation between ex-Yugoslav republics which once warred may prove vital in overcoming a deep ethnic divide that still hobbles Bosnia 15 years after war, the top international envoy said on 1 June. 'Compared to six months ago, we have now an incredibly good climate for regional cooperation, but, what's even more, regional reconciliation,' said Valentin Inzko, the international High Representative. Bosnia's Energoinvest in $52 million deal with Libya 26 December 2007 - Bosnia's largest engineering group Energoinvest has clinched a new $52 million deal with Libya to build power transmission lines and a transformer station, General Manager Dzemail Vlahovljak said. The company is among Bosnia's top five exporters and exports account for half its revenues. (more)
Bosnia takes steps to increase dignity of Parliament 13 August 2007 - Deputies in Bosnia's central parliament could soon face hefty fines for talking on their mobile phones or reading newspapers during parliament sessions. Expressions that are rude to colleagues or that undermine parliament's dignity will also be banned. It is expected that this recently drafted code of conduct will be adopted next month by the Bosnian parliament. (more)
Bosnia's natural beauty makes it a tourist haven 24 July 2007 - Bosnia's tourist arrivals in the first four months of 2007 were almost 20 per cent higher than the same period last year and a World Tourism Organization study predicted the Balkan nation would have the third highest growth rate in the world by 2020. Bosnia's chief peace overseer plans to end mission 26 June 2006 - The international community's High Representative and the European Union's special representative in Bosnia, German diplomat Christian Schwarz-Schilling, states that the country has made sufficient post-war progress to warrant the closing of his office by this time next year. International administrator calls for self-sufficiency for Bosnia-Herzegovina 19 April 2006 - Bosnia-Herzegovina Prime Minister Adnan Terzic called his country 'a successful example' of postwar peace-building and told the United Nations Security Council the government supports plans to transfer international 'ownership' to the country's own institutions. Bosnian hill may have pyramid of ancient civilization 5 December 2005 - Evidence of an ancient civilization, perhaps the Illyrians who inhabited the Balkan peninsula long before Slavic tribes conquered it around AD 600, may be buried in Bosnia. Little is known about the Illyrians, but the discovery is leading to speculation that they were sophisticated and cultured. Indications show an ancient pyramid whose structure is not common to the region. (more)
Bosnia starts landmark talks with European Union 25 November 2005 - Negotiations are underway to integrate Bosnia-Hercegovina into the European Union, as well as promote economic and trade relations. The go-ahead for the stabilization and association agreement talks came after Bosnia adopted a plan for reform of its ethnically divided police force, a key EU requirement. (more)

Police battle protesting Bosnian veterans 21 April 2010 - Police fired tear gas and water cannon on Wednesday in a clash with thousands of veterans of Bosnia's 1992-95 war protesting at benefit cuts in the most violent protest in years in the troubled Balkan country. Former soldiers and their families converged from across Bosnia's Muslim-Croat federation to vent anger at a government decision to cut veterans' benefits as an austerity measure under an International Monetary Fund stand-by loan deal. Under the deal, the government of Bosnia's two regions, the Muslim-Croat federation and the Serb Republic, have to cut public spending, and especially the generous benefits granted to veterans as a pre-election sweetener in 2006.
